1. . ' ...The sons of Sultans used the style of Sultan before their names and Effendi after...Europeans accorded them the title of Prince...with the qualification of Imperial Highness.' (David Williamson, comp., Burke's Royal Families of the World, Vol II, London, 1980, p 238).

2. . Since those responsible for labelling negatives at the Lafayette studio sometimes marked the negative with the date on which the negative came into their hands, rather than with the date of the relevant sitting, it is possible that this negative was made on the previous day, i.e. Coronation Day, 22 June 1911.

3. . 'This very rare order, founded by Abdul Hamid II in 1893, was restricted to members of the Imperial family and it is believed that only sixteen were awarded.....the insignia was worn on a collar chain when in conjunction with other awards. When worn on its own it [was] hung from a ribbon' (Sotheby's Catalogue op cit.)
