INITIAL HEAVY EARTH MOVING
Based upon the designs and surveys, the heavy earth
moving crew (or "spread") then follows, placing additional fill
material upon the road where the sub-grade must be improved, or where
cuts or fills must be made to improve vertical alignment. This spread
consists of four DW-20's, fourteen yard earthmovers, two bulldozers,
one motor-grader. It will move and place a total of 1, 350, 000 cubic
yards of earth to complete the road. The material to be hauled must be
carefully selected to assure that it will have adequate strength and
stability after compaction. A bulldozer is assigned to locate suitable
material in "borrow pits" and keeps well ahead of the earthmovers.
Corrugated steel culverts are placed at the
location of all water courses, the number and size of culverts being
based upon the amount of water which Is expected to flow.
As each layer or "lift" of earth is placed on the
road, water is applied and mixed into the material by the grader
blades, following which it is shaped and then rolled for firm
compaction with heavy, rubber tired rollers.
