Occupied Villages in South Lebanon, 1998

Israel occupies a 9-mile deep strip that extends from South Lebanon to Western Bekaa in the East part of Lebanon. The first occupation of Lebanese territories by Israel was in 1978. Israel exapnded the area it occupies in Lebanon after its 1982 invasion. At one point in 1982, Israel occupied an area of Lebanon that extended from the Lebanese-Israeli border to the border of Tripoli in North Lebanon including the Lebanese mountains and Beirut, the Lebanese capital. Israel was forced to withdraw from most of these territories due mainly to successful warfare by the Lebanese national resistance. As a result, today the Israeli occupation is confined to villages in South Lebanon and the Western Bekaa. The Lebanese national resistance against the Israeli occupiers continues daily inflicting casualties on the Israeli army and its client the so-called South Lebanon Army.

There are many United Nations Security Council resolutions that call on Israel to withdraw from the Lebanese territories it occupies. The first of these resolutions was resolution 425 issued after the 1978 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Many resolutions later followed. However, Israel, supported by the United States and encouraged by the unwilligness of the United Nations to take action, continues to ignore these resolutions. Not only does Israel occupy parts of Lebanon but it continues to violate Lebanon soverignty on a daily basis. Israel continues to shell villages and areas in Lebanon killing innocent civilians. Israeli war planes fly daily over Lebanon sometimes bombing areas deep in Lebanon. The Israeli navy slams blockades on Lebanese ports and harrasses Lebanese fisherman fishing in Lebanese water. All these acts are clear violations of International laws of which Israel is a cosigner.

There are 125 villages directly occupied by Israel. 33 more villages are controlled by Israeli surrogate army "South Lebanon Army" (SLA) and are under indirect Israeli occupation. Here is a list of these villages:
