Subject: Genealogy in Lebanon.
Hi, Would you by any chance have information on Genealogical resources in
Lebanon? My GrandFather came form a place called Biet Menzer. I am
unable to find any information on his surname "Laba" or the town, other
than the possibility that the town was on the southern side of the Wadi
Gorge. I am keenly interested in genealogy and would very much like to
further my knowledge of my Father's heritage. Any information that you
may have would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
My daughter, Nicole Miller, is in the 6th grade at Willowfield
Elementary in Liverpool, NY (a suburb of Syracuse, NY). She has a
school project in which she is to report on traditional Lebanese
clothing. We have been to the local library, but did not gather much
information. We would really appreciate if you could e-mail us back
with a paragraph describing traditional Lebanese clothing worn by men,
women and children. It would also be interesting for her to explain how
she was able to obtain this information over the internet. My e-mail

I just found your page and I am extremely impressed with all the

exactly the way it was back then ( Except students painted the inside
blue with gold stripes). I am attending ACS right now and I am
currently in the 11th grade. It is a great school and I'm glad that it
is on the net. If you need any recent pictures to diplay on the page, I
would be glad to send you some. E-mail back if you are interested .

Subject: ACS Beirut alumni list
Hi,
I was pleased to see the ACS Beirut page, and wondered if I could add my
name to the list. I was a freshman in the boarding dept. in 1974-75.
The next year I returned to Dhahran to take correspondence courses, and
the next year was back in the Wisconsin.
I obtained a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1982, an MS from Univ of
Minnesota in 1984. Then I worked for Hewlett-Packard in San Diego for
five years, then went to MIT for doctoral studies, obtaining my PhD in
1994. Now I work for HP Research and Development in Corvallis, Oregon.
If you can add my name to the list, please use my wife's email address,
which is at home: katieotis@aol.com
Thanks!

Hi,
My name is Sonia Monson and I am the editor of a publication entitled
Zaghareet!. I sent a message about 5 days ago and not sure that you

and am interested in using it. I wrote one, but it lacks the passion and
love Habeeb has for this dynamic singer.I would very much like to use it
with his permission, and again would give due credit to the author and
web site. I have seen so many spellings for Um Kalthoum. What is the
correct spelling or is there a correct spelling? Also I noticed that
this article says Vol. 1, No. 1 at the top of the page. Did it appear in
another publication?
Thank you,

Hello, my name is Cathan, and I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your
web pages! They are the most informative site I have been able to find,
full of information for the curious and intellectual person.
I was also wondering if you could help me out some. I am interested in
middle eastern dance, and I haven't found much information on the web
regarding the genuine dancing of middle eastern peoples. I am a belly
dancer in the U.S., a form of dance which many call middle eastern, but
which (as you may know) is really only *based* on some middle eastern
dance forms. I would like to find more information on the original
dances, both as they are/were in their original form in the country and
as they are now in the cities. I am especially interested in any dance
that is associated with the beliefs of the people.
In case you are wondering, I have a regular job as a computer
programmer, and I'm working also toward a PhD at the local university
(Univ. of South Florida). So, my research is sincere, even if the
subject may seem a little eccentric.
I sincerely appreciate any clues or hints you can spare the time to give
me.
With gratitude,
Cathan Koch

Of all the browsing I have done through your Levant musical lists, you do
not have a single article on Nasri Shamsedine. Is this an oversite? But
you list an Egyptian music group. How is an Egyptian considered Levant?
It is an insult to my family. Nasri Shamsedine was much-loved for his
music. I think it would behoove you to add a seperate artcle on him,
instead of relegating his life to a sentence under Fairuz. He did have
his own career and his own identity that was not under the shadow of
Fairuz.

Unfortunately I am spending way too much time sitting in fromt of my
computer looking at my past.
One question, it would appear that you changed the format. I have
been trying to locate one picture, a wide angled view of the Corniche
from in front of the AUB Faculty apts #2 as well as the British
Embassy. In the center of the picture is a parked red VW Bug.
Scrolling to the left or right one can pick up the view of the
Mediterranean which was our view for over 15 years.
Appreciate your help in locating the picture.
Again, thanks for the memories!

Masa al-kheir everyone,
first of all thank you for re-creating el-sett's homepage.
I found a very interesting transliteration of a mid-20ies-song called "Ya
karawan".
May I ask if it is possible to get a transliteration of the song "El Hob
Kolloh", too ?
And is it possible for you to find the lyrics of the song "El Nil", which
can be found on SonoCairo CD SONO 153 ?
I'd be very pleased to hear from you.
Thanx for patience and answer.

Congradulations on a superb website and greetings from Ellas.
However, how is a site that focuses on near eastern culture complete
without a Hellenic component? Ellas is influenced and influences the
great Arab civilizations and is a unseparable part of the Arab world as
well as the west.

I Haven't talked to you in a (long) while. I've developed a new site
designed for the Lebanese community, and would like to ask if you would
link to it from al-mashriq.
The URL is: http://www.greencedars.com.lb
I can best describe it as "Free Web Pages, Classified Ads, And Information
Services for the Lebanese Community". Feel free to change the description
to what you see fit.
Thanks in advance!
BTW, how is Elie doing? I haven't really been reading a lot of SCL lately so I
haven't heard from him in a while.
take care,

would really apreciate it, please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you

Thank you for providing somtthing close to my heart, I never had the
oppertunity to visit my father's homeland.
I seem to have at least come closer to being in lebanon.
I was wondering if you chaps had anything on Kfar-Michki, Lebanon or
Allepo, Syria.
Very interested in these two sites, the former is my father's birthplace,
the latter is the home of my only Arabic penpal.
Anything would be much appreciated.
Darn good work, will pray for much success.
Have a very nice day and keep up the good work

I was looking at this page..and although it is quiet impressive...
you left out the fact that FakhirEddine was a Druze by origin
a Muslim by protocol and a Christian secretly....he converted in the
Vatican during a trip to what we know today as "Italy"...
Also you leave out his death...when in the turkish court he was ordered
to face east and pray to mecca ...he turned west and did the sign of the
cross....
You will find this to be the case.....further proof....
is that the Shihab Family...can either be Druze, Muslim and
Christian...!
