This digital version of the Post Flora was conceived by Hilda Nassar, director of the Saab Medical Library and Professor Børre Ludvigsen of the Digital Documentation Center at AUB. The volumes have been out of print for many years and are highly sought after by both professionals and amateurs. The flora is a voluminous work of around 1600 pages which is impracticable to scan with an optical character recognition system (ocr) with present resources of the DDC. It has been digitized through a photographic process whereby the pages are presented as photographs. Additionally the pages have been converted to machine-readable text through an automated ocr-process, but not proof-read and corrected - a process that would be far beyond the recourses of either the Saab Medical Library or the DDC. On this site the ocr'ed text is embedded along with the photographed pages. This allows a search facility to find words and return the pages where they might be found with somewhere near 85% - 95% accuracy. While this solution is not ideal, it nevertheless makes the Post Flora available both as a reference and a field guide to all those readers who otherwise would not be able to use it at all. We hope this effort will be of use to the academic community and to the general public. March 2003 : Hilda Nassar - Director, Medical Librarian and Børre Ludvigsen - DDC |
