Um Kalthoum - the singer and her music
|
|
Um Kalthoum was born in 1904 and died in 1975.
She was unquestionably the most gifted singer and musician of this
century in the Middle East. She was continuously popular for over 50
years and her songs are still played nightly on any number of Arabic
language radio stations. The authoritative work on Um Kalthoum, with regard to both personality and music is Virginia Louise Danielson's doctoral disseration from which this biographical outline has been transcribed. (A heavily-revised version of Danielson's disseration will be published in the spring of 1997 by the University of Chicago Press under the title: "The Voice of Egypt": Umm Kulthum, Arabic Song, and Egyptian Society in the Twentieth Century.)
