Dear Colleagues and friends, (excuse the cross posting) Let me first congratulate you the petition that collected over 115 signatures. I have contacted Dr. Leila Badre, of the American University of Beirut. I had a long discussion with her, since she is in Norway (Stavanger) attending the ICOM conferences. Dr. Badre indicates that our petition put archeology in Lebanon in the media and showed their importance. Dr. Badre indicates Mr. Edde has asked all archeologists to come and help. Dr. Badre, who indicates that there is an URGENT need for archeological teams, says we should take him at his word. She is sure that he means what he is saying. So this letter is in fact a new call - a call to organise a team/ two teams of archeologists who could travel to Lebanon AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to help in the archeological digs. I am informed that the most important problem facing the archeologists today is contacting viable teams to come to Lebanon. Dr. Badre indicates that Solidere will cover the costs of the stay of the team in Lebanon. There may be some problems with housing and accomodations. But if we really put our heads at it, something can be arranged. The team members will have to raise some money to cover their travel expences. What this letter is trying to do is to state: 1-our petition had good effects: it put the issue in the media. People in Lebanon are aware that there is international interest in the digs in Lebanon. 2- We now need, according to Dr. Badre, to continue our work positively. Take the authorities at their word and actively try to save the sites in Beirut. 3- This letter is a call to organise a team/ or two that can travel to Lebanon as soon as possible.
