He is still trying to publicise the plight of archaeological remains as the city is rebuilt. ******************************************************************* The following is the relevant text of his message: The destruction of the archaeological heritage of Beirut goes on. For most of it, there is nothing that could be done to change the situation. But for one specific and quite important item, there might still be an opportunity. "They" (the bulldozers, not the archaeologists) have found what is undoubtedly the access wells to two (royal?) tombs of the Bronze Age (anterior to the LBA, very similar to Byblos). The "archaeologist" in charge of the site has, until now, interpreted what she dug as an upper floor room of the 14th century BC, with a cowshed on the first floor. Because of that idiotic interpretation, the bulldozers might soon be allowed to erase the whole site. Help! ***************************************************************** He wants to send a file for distribution, but is not on email. If I receive it unscathed on floppy, I shall try to put it up. Meanwhile, anyone with useful addresses (e.g. UNESCO? Lebanese Embassies?) which we could all shower with letters might be useful. Nick Wyatt: Edinburgh
