general shape of the fragment conforms to such an identification. On the other hand it is difficult to account for the 'raised area between the left pair of parallel lines, should this fragment be a portion of - an apevase. The inscribed surface would form the upper right arm of the ape, which identification, would place the uninscribed, area, between the left parallel lines, at the animal's back.. It is then difficult to account for this latter area. "Moreover, were this fragment a portion of an apevase, one would expect traces of the arm and hand of the young- beast, which is always represented as clinging to the breast of the mother with its arm passed beneath that of -the parent. On the whole it seems unlikely that this piece can have formed part of an ape-vase. The inscription of Pepi I reads: "King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Beloved-of-Re (Mry-r'), living [like], Re [forever]".

7. (I.N. 5021) 17 x 11 cms. Fragment of an alabaster jar. The inscription on the shoulder of the vessel comprises parts of two sentences which were inscribed around the jar, one reading from left to right and one from right to left, the ends meeting in the section here preserved. It reads': (a-a.) "Beloved-of- Re (Pepi J), living forever" ; and (b-b) "[First occurrence of] the Heb-Sed."

8. (I.N. 5036) 10 x 24 cms. Fragment of a diorite bowl. The inscription reads: "Live the Horus, Beloved-of-the-Two-Lands, Son of Re, Pepi (1). First occurrence [of the Heb-S]ed.".

1. (I.N. 5041-2) 17 x 23 cms. Two fragments of an alabaster vase that fit neatly to-, gether and display the full titulary of Pepi I. - (1) "Horus, Beloved-of-the-two-Lands " - (2) "Favorite-of-the- two- goddesses, Merikhet ; Horuses of gold." -(3)"King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Son of Re, Pepi."(4) Reading from the middle in both directions: "Given life and fullness" forever," and "Given fullness -forever." - (5) "First occurrence of the Heb-Sed."

1. (I.N. 5020) 13.5 x 4.5 cms. Fragment of an alabaster disc, very thin and flat. The inscription reads: "[Live] the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Beautiful-is-the-Ka-of-Re (Pepi ID, given life like Re forever", the whole being inclosed in a cartouche. Cf.
